Summer Fashion Hints

by Dorothy on July 12, 2010

When I was a little girl I was kind of a tom boy. I stayed in the woods. I was raised in the country, from sun up to sun down. My family didn’t have a lot of money and I was the baby of four kids so when it came to clothes….you just kind of wore what was given to you or what your sisters had grown out of. As I grew older though, I started to really notice clothes and I would get really creative with the few things I did have. My sister Jen and I would put together any money we had and try to figure out what clothes we could buy and accessories we could share to have the most outfits. Because we had to use mostly our own money, which wasn’t much, we learned to be creative and choose well.

To this day those childhood life lessons have served me well when it comes to fashion. Whether I have a lot of money to spend or very little, the challenge to myself is always the same, to find the accessories and clothing items that I can use in a lot of different ways to make the most outfits. Now, I realize that lessons on fashion may not really seem that important but for myself, as I have written before, fashion and my appearance is a way that I express myself. I feel empowered and prepared when I feel I look my best. In saying that, every season I try to find at least a few staple items that I know will carry me through that season and keep on point in regards to fashion. Now, I very much like to shop, however, I always try to find a few key pieces that I can have on hand that I can throw on with anything during that season and they will look chic and fun. Many times, I will pour over magazines and notice the trends that are the latest and then find the version that works best for my style and look. I also love it when I can find a deal!!

This summer one of the trends I noticed were large,  oversized canvas bags with a ladylike style. Everyone from Jennifer Anniston to Katie Holmes is carrying them in one style or another. Now, they usually carry a massive price tag so I went on the search to find one that I loved yet didn’t feel guilty for buying!!! After a few weeks of searching I found a great Michael Kors bag on sale at Bloomies that fit the bill perfectly!!! It has a great look and I can throw it on with some casual white jeans and fadora or with one of the seasons ivory or white hot little dresses and I am right on trend! It was a great find. Also, in summer I always freeze in the stores and restaurants due to the below zero air conditioning in the south so I always try to find a few cute summer pieces that are light that I can throw on with anything and still look cute. This summer I found a great little cardigan, which are so hot right now, by Billa Bong and I wear it with everything! Top it off with my new rose gold colored watch and I’d say my summer staples are complete!

Like I said, lessons on fashion are definitely not going to change the world but I believe that God creates a desire in women to love beautiful things. The most beautiful things in my life are relationship with Christ and my family. My desire is to serve them and honor them in all that I do. For me, I just feel like I can serve them a little better while getting my fashion on! :)

Check out the pics for a few of my new favorite things for summer!

Thanks for this reminder that God really did make us to love and appreciate beauty. It’s part of His character. Just look at all the beauty that He created for us to enjoy in this amazing world. What a generous God!
